Established
Sanur. An established area with stable tourism, many local residents and a solid occupancy rate.
The meter
Each meter runs between two neutral end points. No judgement is attached. The dot shows where the area stands now.
Tourism
Stable, solidThere is tourism, but it is more the kind of tourism you also have in Kuta. Often somewhat older people, and many seniors live here. Tourism is stable and the occupancy rate is solid.
Economy
A boost from the hospitalThe economy is getting a boost. An international hospital has recently opened in Sanur. There are also plans to invest around Sanur, among other places on the island of Serangan, where the Kura Kura Bali special economic zone is located.
Living environment
Hardly any open landscapeThere is not really any open landscape left. That is a pity. But Denpasar extends all the way here.
Infrastructure
Busy, but manageableThe harbour of Sanur has connections to Nusa Lembongan, the Gili Islands and Lombok, which makes it an important place. It is an established area. The infrastructure is busy, but manageable.
Local interests
Many local residentsA lot of local people live here, alongside the tourism.
Social impact
Positive social impact
- For local residentsWork and income, because tourism has been here for a long time and occupancy is solid.
- For the areaInvestment and jobs through the hospital and the special economic zone.
- For the areaEarly rules and targeted planning mean Sanur has fewer acute problems than, for example, Canggu.
Negative social impact
- For the surroundingsBuilding in an area that is already full. The open landscape is gone, because Denpasar extends all the way here.
- For traffic and accessInfrastructure that is already busy. New investment around Sanur and Serangan comes on top of that.
- For local residentsNew investment that is largely aimed at international patients and visitors. The international hospital mainly treats patients from abroad. What that means for the local population is an open question.
My view
Sanur is an established and solid area: stable tourism, many local people and seniors who live here, and an economic boost from the international hospital and the plans around Serangan. But there are negative effects too. The open landscape is gone, the infrastructure is already busy, and part of the new investment is aimed at international visitors rather than at the people who live here. Still, I would call it a good area, as long as you know that.
I don't want to tell you what to do. I want to inform you. Know what your choice means, positive as well as negative, and then make the choice yourself.
